This covers reading & writing—neither of which were a given in the 1100s. It also covers the Trivium and Quadrivium, the foundations of the Medieval education.

Folklore (Occult)

Folklore is what “everyone knows.” Everyone knows that if you peel an apple in one go and drop it into a barrel of rainwater on St. John’s Eve, you can foresee your future intended. Everyone knows a witch can curse a cow to give sour milk.


Herbalism falls under this, as do leeches and barber-surgeries. Medicine is what you need to determine if chopping a gangrenous limb is wise, and how to do it without the patient bleeding out. Dental work too!

Natural Philosophy

The science catch-all. Science and religion got along just fine in this era – since God was the creator, you were simply discovering his mechanisms.

Everything in this section is pretty self-explanatory. Athletics covers general physical fitness – running, swimming, jumping, farming!



Etiquette isn’t just knowing what fork to eat with per course—doubly useless, as forks didn’t even exist yet!—but knowing what to say to whom and not get sent to the stocks.


Courtly Love was flowering at this time, and many Nobles and Knights were capable of composing poetry and courtly lays, accompanying themselves on lutes, citterns, and mandolins.
